In March, we are thrilled to present one of the first US performances of Missy Mazzoli's bass concerto, Dark with Excessive Bright with Jeffrey Turner as guest soloist!  Jeff was principal bass of the Pittsburgh Symphony for 31 years and is now a professor at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.

Our exploration "of dark and bright" includes a number of other works that were also inspired by music of the past. A major highlight is Pulitzer Prize winner Caroline Shaw'sTo the Hands for voices and strings, which was commissioned as a response to Ad manus from Dieterich Buxtehude’s 17th century masterpiece, Membra Jesu Nostri. To the Hands integrates plainchant and excerpts of Latin from the Buxtehude work, with contemporary texts, including elements of Emma Lazarus' poem on the Statue of Liberty, and numbers of internally displaced persons, by country, sourced from the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC).

The balance of the program will include Chen Yi's ShuoOttorino Respighi's Ancient Airs & Dances, Suite 3Ruth Crawford Seeger's Andante for Strings, and more!
